The Greek GodsĪ game about TROY wouldn’t be complete without some gods meddling in human affairs. Agent abilities cost you food, so you can’t just spam them around the map. With their powerful abilities, you can turn the tide of war or even your economy temporarily to get out of a bad situation. They're pretty useful in buffing your own armies, cities as well weakening the enemies, but the idea of micro managing these agents each turn slows down the pace of the game.Īlthough I have to admit, you are limited to only three agents which sort of reduces the annoyances of using them.Įpic agents are special agents you get by being in good favour with the gods (which I’ll get to next). The spy, envoy and priestess have their own passive and active abilities that may assist you in your campaign for total domination.

Some are great in sieges, some in defence etc. These heroes come in different classes that are specialised for particular tactics. Using them strategically when you need him to impart a specific bonus will be vital for a successful Achilles campaign.Īll the other Epic Heroes get their own unique mechanics that leads to favouring a specific playstyle.īesides the Epic Heroes, there are recruitable heroes you hire to lead your armies. The player who chooses Achilles will have to understand what are the triggers for the different emotions, their advantages and disadvantages. That’s painful and can drain your food over time. If he is angry, he fights better, but resource generation in settlements suffers a 30% penalty. There are five emotional states he could be in, from grieving to being outraged. Like previous few Total War titles, heroes are the main attraction in TROY. It all serves the purpose to make TROY quicker game and very war-focused. It hearkens back to the simpler days of Total War, similar to what’s in SHOGUN 2: Total War with some minor additional diplomatic options such as offering to join wars of your allies. Diplomacy is a vehicle to pursue your expansion strategy and improve resource yields. Don’t expect much political maneuverings in TROY. Speaking of trade, diplomacy is way more streamlined compared to THREE KINGDOMS: Total War. Over the edge of the map are stylistic illustrations of Greecian tapestry. It’s lush, mountainous and the large Aegean sea at the centre divides the factions up rather nicely, making the early game and late game very different. The campaign map in TROY reminds me a lot of WARHAMMER II: Total War. Character dynamics such as loyalty, families, court and diplomacy are out of the picture for a more streamlined experience.īut in terms of the scale of the map, TROY isn’t exactly small. Mainly, many of the systems from THREE KINGDOMS are not present. Since this is a Total War Saga game, in some aspects it is smaller in scope. They call it ‘The Truth Behind the Legend’. The tales in the Iliads may have been steeped in legendary and mythical elements such as giants, beasts and even the whole idea of the Trojan Horse (which experts agree was highly unlikely to have happened), but with TROY, Creative Assembly went for a more realistic approach. While TROY follows through on the formula set by Total War: WARHAMMER and Total War: THREE KINGDOMS, with heroes leading factions each with their own unique traits and mechanics, TROY adds its own flavour to things. The gods meddle in the affairs of human and vye for their adoration. Take part in an epic tale as heroes clash for justice, for love, for vengeance.

It’s a neat thing to have I suppose, but was never something I was looking for in a Total War game.Įnter A Total War Saga: TROY, the second in the Saga series which frankly didn’t get off to a good start with Thrones of Britannia, admittedly a game I skipped, and perhaps for good reason. You felt more involved building up these characters than ever before. Characters were the centre stage, with more personality and uniqueness. It’s been an on-again and off-again situation as my personal preference for historically focused games ran afoul with what Creative Assembly has been doing with the past few Total Wars.įrom WARHAMMER to THREE KINGDOMS, Creative Assembly has delved deeper into the characters and heroes.
